How Your Child Learns Best is a groundbreaking guide for parents that combines the latest brain research with the best classroom practices to reveal scientifically savvy ways to improve your child's success in school.

Written by Judy Willis, MD, MEd, a board-certified neurologist who is also a full-time classroom teacher, How Your Child Learns Best shows you not only how to help your child learn schoolwork, but also how to capitalize on the way your child's brain learns best in order to enrich education wherever you are, from the grocery store to the car - a necessity in today's "teach to the test" world.

By using everyday household items and enjoyable activities, parents of children ages three to twelve can apply targeted strategies (based on age and learning strength) in key academic areas, including:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Math word problems
  • Test preparation
  • Fractions and decimals
  • Oral reading
  • Reports and projects
  • Science and history
  • Reading motivation
  • Vocabulary

Discover how to help your child increase academic focus and success, lower test stress while increasing test scores, increase class participation, foster creativity, and improve attention span, memory, and higher-level thinking.

How Your Child Learns Best shows how to maximize your child's brain potential and offers something for every parent who wants the best for his or her child.

"At last we parents now have a reference that will help guide us in assisting our children's growth and flowering. This book is what parents have been searching for and need now more than ever." - from the foreword by Goldie Hawn

5 out of 5 starsValuable insights on many levels, 2008-12-26
I wish my parents had understood some of this when I was a kid. Dr. Willis's book identifies ways to nurture the brain's natural learning abilities by tapping into your child's innate curiosity, creativity, and sense of humor. Her insights are highly useful to me even now, as an older grad student trying to organize my own learning strategies and to synthesize the relationship between research and teaching in an academic environment. Better understanding of how the brain works is also helpful in simply navigating the many levels of decision-making I encounter each day while incorporating new knowledge.

Dr. Willis uses her knowledge of the brain (15 years as a board certified neurologist) to apply techniques in teaching ALL children. She currently works as a middle school teacher. This book for parents includes lots of teaching techniques that can be used at home with background information about the brain. I found it extremely interesting as well as practical.

5 out of 5 starsUseful help, 2008-09-25
Dr. Willis combines her expertise as a neurologist and her experience as a classroom teacher. She writes about learning in clear, accessible language.

As an educational therapist and a veteran classroom teacher , I found this book offers detailed information about the neurology of how children learn, and also contains a deep understanding of what happens in a classroom.

This book is an invaluable tool for parents, and the professionals who work with children in educational settings. It will help parents understand how their child learns best.

5 out of 5 starsThis book should be on every parents nightstand, 2008-09-07
Every parent should be so lucky to have this book on their nightstand. It is truly a treasure of information and reference guide which give you the tools, inspiration and understanding in helping your child through frustrating periods of learning. My son, Andreas (7), loves the activities we've already tried, especially the dice game. He often brings me the book and asks what next we can play and learn together. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

5 out of 5 starsBetter School Grades, 2008-08-24
It took Dr. Willis' traing and experience as a neurologist and a classroom teacher to provide parents like me the best ways to discover my childrens individual learning strengths and the guide me to specific strategies that work best for each of them. I like the way the book includes ways to enrich school with things we do at home, driving in the car, and at the market. My children are more attentive and participate more in their classrooms.
