Product Description
From a Pulitzer Prize winner comes the story of an unforgettable moment in American history: the historic meeting between General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant that ended the Civil War. MacKinlay Kantor captures all the emotions and the details of those few days: the aristocratic Lee’s feeling of resignation; Grant’s crippling headaches; and Lee’s request—which Grant generously allowed—to permit his soldiers to keep their horses so they could plant crops for food.

1 out of 5 starsNeeds the original drawings by Donald McKay, 2008-05-02
It is nice to see one of MacKinlay Kantor's childrens' books on the Civil War back in print. I highly recommend anything Kantor has written whether it be for children or adults. However, this edition does not include the illustrations by Donald McKay that appeared in the original Randomn House Landmark Book first published in 1950. McKay was a unique book illustrator. His pen and ink drawings have a "rustic" look that was well-suited to history based books (check out the Grossett and Dunlap editions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which are still in print).

Some may think that the illustraions from the previous edition of this book are secondary to the text, but keep in mind that this book was written at a time when books for young people, from toddles through teens, were always illustrated. We now live a world where visual communication is overtaking the written word so it seems strang that illustations are rarely put into new teen books and reprints are having the pictures removed.

So, try to find a used edition of the original Lee and Grant at Appomattox. It will cost less, plus you will get the added bonus of McKay's illustrations.
