Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This pocket-sized clinical companion is designed to assist in the assessment of psychiatric nursing clients, formulation of nursing diagnoses, and design of psychiatric nursing care plans. It provides quick and easy access to the detailed and concrete information students need to know as they visit the inpatient unit, community mental health setting, or home care setting. The content is clinically based, rather than theory based. This avoids repetition of material that students already have in their mental health nursing textbooks and makes it a perfect reference for clinical use.

  • The latest diagnoses, assessment and treatment strategies, and psychotropic drug information relevant to nursing care of clients with psychiatric disorders.
  • A focus on clinical information in order to assist the nurse in providing patient care in the inpatient unit, community mental health setting, or home care setting.
  • Coverage of all major disorders commonly encountered in a clinical setting.
  • Care plans with a nursing diagnosis etiology, assessment findings/diagnostic cues, outcome criteria, long-term goals, short-term goals, and interventions and rationales.
  • A chapter on Major Psychotropic Interventions and Client and Family Teaching provides coverage of psychopharmacology in addition to the content found in each disorder chapter.

  • The most recent information in the field, including the DSM-IV-TR taxonomy and 2005-2006 NANDA nursing diagnoses.
  • Assessment tools collected in an appendix for quick reference.
  • An appendix of drug monographs features the most commonly prescribed psychiatric medications.
  • Revised and expanded client outcome sections include additional outcome criteria, short-term goals, and long-term goals for each diagnosis.
  • Additional content on forensic issues in psychiatric nursing is integrated throughout as applicable.
  • Online drug cards, updated quarterly, provide users with the latest drug information and can be printed and carried along with the manual.

5 out of 5 starsNOT just careplans - tons of useful info for psych class & beyond, 2008-04-10
This was required for my psych rotation and initially I almost didn't buy it (many classes have extra texts that you don't really need - I thought this might be one...) However, our professor emphasized that the psych dx in regular nursing care plan books aren't right & don't have all that pertain specifically to psych/mental health and lack correct interventions.

As it turns out, I used this little book significantly more than I used the primary text for the class! It has info on the various psych drugs with indications & things to watch out for, info on appropriate communication styles when dealing with individuals displaying particular behaviours incl. therapeutic communication, descriptions of all the various defense mechanisms etc. It's really worth the $$$.

This is one text I will keep beyond nursing school for easy reference to all things psych.

5 out of 5 starsNURSING STUDENTS, 2008-01-31
This book was very helpful...If you have the Mental Health book by Elizabeth Varcarolis 5th edition then this book is good to have. It helps with careplans and it has a lot of the psychiatric meds plus interventions. Example with Lithium; for Bipolar-you want to check serum lithium levels weekly/biweekly during therapy. It gives you interventions and nursing considerations for the drugs. So it does have a lot of information in it. Its small but it is a great book to have for Mental Health.

5 out of 5 starsGreat tool for better understand of psychiatric disorders, 2007-01-10
This was recommended to me by a classmate. It also was valuable when working on a focused care plan. I continue to go to it to emphasize what I had learned through readings and lectures. If psychatric nursing is not your forte, this will definetly help you out.

Excellent resource for my altered mental health nursing course. Lots of information and easy to follow. I would recommend this as a supplement to any psych nursing course.
