Product Description
Offering quick access to the pathological conditions most commonly seen in the physician's office, this portable text/reference is ideal for administrative and clinical medical assistants who have responsibilities such as billing, coding, telephone screening, taking patient examinations, understanding diagnostic and treatment procedures, and putting together patient education programs. Reflecting the latest changes in the field, this fourth edition describes over 500 conditions and disorders, and includes ICD-9-CM codes for each disease entry. A companion website enhances understanding with exercises, patient screening and patient teaching critical thinking questions, A&P web links, and certification exam review questions.

  • Enrichment boxes show how information relating to a disease or system applies to everyday life.
  • ICD-9-CM codes are included for each disease entry, offering practice in looking up codes in an ICD-9-CM reference.
  • Current medical information on the most commonly encountered clinical disorders is condensed and simplified for easier application.
  • Full-color illustrations reinforce the text and clarify key information.
  • A consistent format for disease entries follows the real-life progression of a patient's care and treatment, with this format:.
    • Description
    • Symptoms and Signs
    • Patient Screening (Unique!)
    • Etiology

  • Review challenges reinforce content and help students see where they may need additional study.
  • Real-life challenges provide actual cases with questions, relating chapter content to a real-world case.

  • Orderly Function A&P reviews of specific body systems now include clearer descriptions and more illustrations, helping students compare systems in normal and disease states.
  • Coverage of Avian Flu describes how diseases emerge from the animal to the human world, and prepares medical assistants for the potential dangers of this disease.
  • Key Terms include pronunciations and are broken down into prefixes, roots and suffixes.

5 out of 5 starsNo Hassles, 2008-09-11
I would definately recommend anyone who has never used amazon.com to order a textbook to do so. It was extremely easy, no hassles & it arrived very quickly. I also messed up when I ordered and gave a po box instead of physical address but, they resolved it quickly without any glitches.

4 out of 5 starsBought it for school., 2007-02-08
This book is great to me but my teacher says it's missing alot of information. However it is easy to read, and comprehend.

4 out of 5 starsA good book not for beginners, not for pros, 2000-07-02
Essentials of Human Diseases and Conditions looks and reads much like my college anatomy and physiology text with a good glossary and many colorful illustrations. It does not have pre- or post- tests, or chapter objectives or reviews. The book is easy on the eyes and easy to browse; not formatted as a crowded exhaustive reference.

The book is a well organized and indexed study of the most common human diseases (Cushings syndrome is represented, pheochromocytoma is not.) The text is arranged by the human body systems. The diseases of each system are presented first with discussion of symptoms and indications, then origin and cause, then methods of diagnosis, and finally treatment

The book's preface indicates it was written for "students of clinical medicine in the fields of medical assisting, medical transcription, insurance coding and other allied health programs who have had an introduction to basic anatomy and physiology of the human body and to medical terminology". I do agree there are prerequisites to the text; it is not a "home and family" reference. I am a degreed medical radiological technologist with some years of experience and wanted a quick reference to review the disease processes of some of the patients I do CTs on. The book is useful but not as complete as I would like. I will need to supplement it with an extensive, harder on the eyes and harder to browse reference.
