Tony DiTerlizzi on Illustrating the Cover for Peter Pan in Scarlet
I grew up with J. M. Barrie's Peter and Wendy and later read Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens which was illustrated by the great turn-of-the-century artist, Arthur Rackham. Peter's carefree spirit and nature is what I adored as a child and long for now as an adult. And these are the feelings I tried to convey into my rendition of the boy-who-would-not-grow-up.

In working on an image for the American jacket of this authorized sequel, I went through many designs trying to capture the spirit of the 100-year-old character while making him intriguing to the readers of today. This, of course, is much easier said than done.

Many of us have an idea of what Peter Pan should look like based on stage plays, movies, and the myriad of illustrated books, but in actuality both J. M. Barrie and Geraldine McCaughrean describe very few of his physical features. This opens up a lot of room for visual interpretation for an illustrator, however anything too severe in redesign would lead to confusion of identifying who this iconic and (dare I say) mythic character is. So I tried to breathe some new life into his appearance, but still remain faithful to the Peter Pan we all know and love.

2 out of 5 starsThat was it?, 2008-11-29
I absolutely LOVE Peter Pan, I own an original copy of the J. M. Barrie book. So naturally I was VERY excited to hear about the world wide competition for a sequel, and got the book as soon as it came out. I would just like to know how many people entered this competition and did the people who picked the winner READ the first book at all.
This book has so many discrepancies to the original and the characters didn't "real" enough. I was deeply disappointed in this book. I found it was hard to get through, boring and nothing like the original.

Peter Pan in Scarlet is the official sequel to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, one of my favourite childhood books (there are other treatments, but this is the version authorised by the copyright holder, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. The copyright has expired).

The sequel opens with Wendy and the Lost Boys all grown up, for the most part with families of their own and happy. Then they start dreaming of Neverland...soon they find themselves going back (using a rather unorthodox and yet strangely logical method) to find Peter.

Neverland is a polluted place now, darker and more dangerous than ever - the light Disney cartoon version obscures just how dark a place it is, and how dark a character Peter Pan is, too. This book does not shy away from that; in fact, it is an exploration of that darkness in Peter, without losing the gently funny tone of the original that made the darkness so much more palatable (hey, it is is a children's book after all: children like to be scared by darkness, and then they like to be reassured that darkness can be overcome).

One example of the intermingling of the dark and the light is very early on in the book: one of the Lost Boys (now called Old Boys) is not mentioned. Just...not mentioned. And just as you start wondering where the hell he is (has the author messed up?) - well, they're all grown up, aren't they? It's now the 1920s, isn't it? There's been a Great War in between the two books...the worst part is, of course, Peter's reaction. He's just being Peter and Peter's a selfish little git most of time. That doesn't make him less likeable, just less...trustworthy. And more noble when he fights his own nature.

McCaughrean competed with over 100 other writers to get the job, and she did well with it. It didn't have the same magic for me as the original, but, really, how could it? It was always a worry that she'd ruin Peter Pan with an unworthy sequel, and she surely did not do that; she captured the tone and the characters and took us back to Neverland.

PETER PAN IN SCARLET by Geraldine McCaughrean should be read by every fan of J.M. Barrie's PETER PAN.

The reader will return to the age at which they first read the original and re-experience the wonder of seeing the world through the eyes of Peter Pan and his gang of comrades in adventure. It is the first approved sequel to the original tale, and the author manages to capture the style and excitement of Mr. Barrie's classic. It is remarkable in every sense of the word and, like the original, proceeds go to the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and not to Barrie's estate.

Set in the 1920s, nightmares are slipping out of Neverland and into the real world to find Wendy and the original Lost Boys, who are now respectable adults with children of their own. They revert to children in a magical way and the adventure begins.

Neverland is no longer a land of eternal summer. It is currently Autumn, something that has not happened before. When Wendy and the Lost Boys make it back to Neverland, they meet Peter, who is alone but still the essence of Boy. After fighting through the denial of Peter, who loves Neverland in reds and golds as much as he does in shades of green, it is up to them to save it.

They face their worst fears, remember who they once were, and deal with the sadness of loss and the joy of love with a youthful exuberance that J.M. Barrie would be proud of. His creations are treated with the utmost respect and tenderness by an author who is truly in love with her story.

This book is terrible. If you love the classic, pass this awful thing up. It's offensive to all senses. Even smell.

I'm sure you'll still read it. Just don't buy it. You probably know someone who bought a copy and now wants desperately to throw it away. Steal it from their trash. You'll thank me. That is, after you apologize for not listening to me in the first place.
