1 out of 5 starsThe author was a salesman., 2010-03-15
I read this short story in a day. From what I gathered, the author was just pushing his penny stocks. I don't disagree that he may have made a killing on penny mining stocks from Canada, but there was not real method to his madness. For someone who titles their book "Forty Years A Speculator", you would think there may be some information in there about how. The book was basically a contrarian's point-of-view without any supporting facts or figures.

The icing on the cake was that the last few pages of the book were penny mining stocks that the author owned.

5 out of 5 starsUnique, 2010-03-13
You won't find another investing book like this one. The bottom line is that you have to be willing to take calculated risks in order to make money investing/speculating. Well worth the 2-3 hours it takes to read.

5 out of 5 starsIf you read only one book on stocks - make it this one. Short, adventurous & rewarding!, 2010-02-11
A must read for anybody interested in jumping into the very cool, super worthwhile world of hard asset stocks! An amazing, condensed 40 years of stock trading knowledge - it will set your mind FREE & STRAIGHT from the tail-chasing & hypnotic "Dr. Mesmer" laced world of CNBC. And, consequently turn you onto a new area of low risk stocks. Better than anything else the market can offer. You will find yourself walking around with an amazing level of newfound "common sense" regarding the stock market and it's touts - the news will never look the same again. I can fairly say, I knew probably 1/2 of what Fred goes over in this book and have been trading with these principles for years with no regret. But, the knowledge he presents was so refreshing and consolidated, it helped me un-clutter my thoughts and give me new confidence, vindication, and a whole new vocabulary. You could spend $ hundreds per year for newsletters that harp on the same principles or waste your time with huge, boring books (that will likely just confuse). This little green book is a gem! The knowledge it contains will keep you in the action, while safe at the same time. Thats what those firms & advisers on TV (who want your money) can only claim to offer. Do it yourself - make it really happen - rather than funding a bunch of soft-peddling stuffed shirts.
Inside, are also some of the greatest further-reading recommendations I have ever encountered. Since reading this I moved on to the aforementioned stock traders' classics - unaware of these before.

It is amazing that after such a short read, that you can be so well set up for very leveraged - yet conservative, stock market action.
It's also the most concise & entertaining look into what's really going on in the world economy, precious metals and most interestingly OIL.

In conclusion: BUY THIS BOOK. It's really cheap. The knowledge inside is worth 1000 times it's price, easy.

2 out of 5 starsAbsolutely Cynical and Jaded, 2010-01-17
This unfortunate tome (or should I say pamphlet?) by Fred Carach is an absolutely cynical and jaded diatribe. Though there is some wisdom like the superior movements of small caps over large, the weakening world economy and how to play it, and gusty specific stock picks that you don't normally get from other investment books Carach undermines his credibility when he rips everyone from William J. O'Neil to trend followers to Benjamin Graham to Nicholas Darvas in the most caustic of ways within the first 30 pages. He also repetitively alternates in disturbing fashion between a self described riverboat gambler to a Clint Eastwood caricature that is unsettling the first, second and third time he devotes too must ink to it. To be taken seriously you must write seriously. Also no publisher is to be found anywhere inside this book which hints to me that Carach is quite possibly self published and edited (many typos and typesetting mistakes throughout this book) and without a literary agent or publisher. Go figure. With this man's viewpoint on the markets it's no wonder he's living in a condo in South Florida (he's admission, not my allegation) and not inside a luxury gated community the likes of which the John W. Henrys of the world reside as a result of true stock market success. Don't believe the jacked up ratings littering this books listing. If it seems too good to be true.......

4 out of 5 starsFred Crach's Book Forty Years A Speculator is Priceless, 2009-12-23
I wish I had read this book before donating a lot of money to the markets several years ago. I especially like the strategies he spells out for profiting with gold and silver miners. They are a different breed of equity that can provide life changing wealth if chosen properly and this book will help you navigate the perils of market makers and manipulators along with your fear and greed.

Surprisingly, Mr. Carach lays out his blueprint for success with wit and humor, tempered with common sense and great advice.

I back tested several of his strategies and they were very profitable minus slippage and commissions. The strategies are designed with hedges to offset draw down. As with any strategy, you will have losses but the key is cut them short and let your winners run. Detach yourself emotionally from your portfolio and use money management for position sizing.
This is a great education for any trader/investor.
