Product Description In "Horses Never Lie," acclaimed horse trainer Mark Rashid breaks new ground by challenging the longstanding belief that a person must become the "alpa leader" in order to work with horses. Instead, "Horses Never Lie" teaches you how to become a "passive leader"—a reflection of the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to be around and to follow. It’s a must read for all horse owners who care about their horses and the kind of relationship they have with them. As he did in "Considering the Horse" and "A Good Horse Is Never a Bad Color," Rashid writes about his experiences with real horses, always featuring his sense of humor and an overriding compassion for the horse. His instructive anecdotes reach back to when he was a youngster under the mentorship of the "old man," and continue to his experiences today as a horse trainer and a popular clinician who has traveled the world to teach his remarkably effective methods to enthusiastic horse owners.

Horses, 2008-12-30 Horseback riding is my new passion. I've always wanted to learn but thought that I had to have my own horse. I am buying magazines, books, DVDs -- anything that will get me more connected to the horse. This book has helped me to do that. In reading this story of a little boy's experience with horses which developed into a passion is wonderful. I learned so much from these experiences and plan to use the things I learned during my riding lessons and when I purchase my own horse. This was a great book, which I would read again.

review from "puppy", 2008-12-14 As a long time, successful, professional canine trainer/behaviorist I have started to "get into" horses...I have been working with a friend's difficult horse for about 7 months...We had stopped the biting behavior and I have learned so much from my friend and this horse; who is "tough" but extremely loving...We have become very quiet with the horses, and subsequently the herd has settled down too; and we just naturally proceed gently with what we are doing with them..One of the things that we instituted is that all horses needed to be shown whatever object we were going to use with them from grooming tools to blankets, saddles, halters,
bridles, etc. After reading Mark's book I realized that we were including the horses in what we were doing with them, which we kind-of knew...I suppose we were getting their "permission".. One of the horses moved when a blanket was thrown over them, I suggested that we show the horse the blanket first, tell the horse what it was ("blanket"), and that ended the horses being surprised....I went with this friend to an Equine Affair and was aghast how the "trainers" were so "heavy handed" with the animals!!...I have NEVER needed to be aggressive with the dogs to have them do what we wanted them to do!..I wondered if because of the size of animals the trainers felt that aggressive techniques were necessary?...I also noticed that these "well known" trainers never verbally, or physically, praised the horses for finally figuring out what these people wanted!!..I was actually very upset when I left the show...I was wandering around Amazon looking for some more horse books and came across this book, Horses Never Lie...I ordered it and everything for me fell into place with the horses!!..This is truly the most remarkable book I have read in decades, and I am so pleased that Mark wrote it...The only point I disagree with is his label of the "passive" leader, I prefer to call the position the "chosen" leader..I am writing a dog book and I have a friend who has been encouraging me because she feels I am speaking for the dogs...Through this book, and "the old man", Mark is speaking for the horses...Amazing!

AWESOME!, 2008-09-11 This is my favorite of Mark's books. Although I love them all. I have read all 5 and am waiting for more. I read them in 1-3 sittings, cannot put them down! I am starting to buy this book for friends and family, I think Mark's books should be a prerequisite for horse ownership! I have raised and trained horses for close to 30 years. I have read a lot, try to keep an open mind & keep learning. Anyway I have pretty much developed my way of doing things and had found in the past, by checking out more trainer's books that either I did not agree or they were for the "new to horses" person. I had read the reviews here on Mark's books, then just happened to find a couple Mark Rashid books used at a sale & thought okay, they're cheap, I'll try them! I could not put them down! Some things that Mark shares reinforce what I've learned myself, but I found lots to learn in these books too. We had an old cowboy/trainer/farrier/castrater/teeth floater/friend who lived around here for years. If I needed to learn anything about horses, I'd ask Sonny, the thing was Sonny never "gave" you the answer! He told you a story & let you learn the answer yourself! Mark's books remind me of that. Mark's books will follow you through your life. He offers the teachings of truly living well & with compassion in your daily life. 2 things always come into my head since reading his books . . . WHAT DOES MY HORSE THINK ABOUT THIS? and IS THIS REALLY WORTH WORRYING ABOUT? 90% of the time we worry about the little things that we don't need to. Mark's books are an AWESOME read for anyone!
