Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Completely revised and expanded to reflect the rapidly changing sphere of information services, this comprehensive introduction to the management of libraries builds the basic skills good library managers must exercise. The authors offer an authoritative approach on the fundamental concepts of management while recognizing the diverse needs of different operating environments. This edition features two new chapters - Managing Diversity and Career Development - and is kept up to current by material housed on the Web. Drawing from examples of successful leadership techniques from a variety of services archives, information brokers, libraries, records managements and more, this book demonstrates the most effective ways to plan, delegate, make decisions, communicate, and lead a team. Equal emphasis is placed on personal, fiscal, and technological issues, as well as a look at what the future may hold for incoming managers. A practical, up-to-date introduction to library management, here is a text that will appeal to LIS educators, new and experienced libraries in management positions, students, and anyone wishing to acquire a sound knowledge of both the theory and practice of management within the changing information workforce.

3 out of 5 starsNo bad as textbooks go., 2009-01-06
The content of this text was right on target with everything I needed to know for my course. I wish it would have detailed business cases and line item budgets in a bit more detail but overall a pretty good book. I was not impressed with the quality however. For the price of the book, the quality/appearance was pretty poor.I work for a publishing company and the quality was on par with a much cheaper/far inferior, international edition. The pages appeared hazy/grainy and the cover art looked like it had been slapped together by a high school art class. The content did provide some redeeming qualities but for $75 I expected a much nicer product.

4 out of 5 starsGreat comprehensive text, 2007-05-11
This text was assigned for a management class. It was a very easy read, and is packed with a lot of information. However, there are a lot of little errors that do not take away from the content but do reduce the quality of the presentation of the product.

5 out of 5 starsfantastic book for beginners, 2003-09-18
The book takes complex issues and presents them in a very straightforward manner.

Very easy to follow and "puts it all together" for the reader.
I am using this book as a supplement to a class I am taking and it is a "life saver".

5 out of 5 starsAuthoritative, informative, highly recommended introduction., 2000-09-06
This introduction to library management provides important overviews and ideas on how to manage a library, from its people and budget to its housing and technology. Information managers receive important guidelines specific to the library environment, from making decisions and delegating work to motivating co-workers.
