Renovation: Completely Revised and Updated

This is, hands down, the very best home renovation book I've ever read. And as former editor of This Old House magazine, I've seen `em all. Renovation 3rd Edition covers the entire home renovation process, from inspecting an old house before you buy it to the hundreds of steps and decisions you'll encounter in a renovation. Author Mike Litchfield (a founding editor of Fine Homebuilding magazine) writes in a down-to-earth conversational style that's comprehensive, practical and easy to understand. He also has a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor that makes this book not only useful, but great fun to read. Excellent drawings and photos show you just the information you need, and the book is liberally sprinkled with pro tips and insights that will save you time, money and heartache--guaranteed. Renovating an old house is a big, messy, emotional process, but one of the most satisfying projects you can tackle in life. If you're even thinking about taking the plunge, there's no better roadmap to follow than Mike Litchfield's book.

Look what I did ..., 2008-11-10
I bought this hoping there would be some good pointers on HOW TO but instead I got a "look what I did " book. It tells very little on any single subject but shows pictures and describes activities of others without telling any "how to" essentials on any of the projects described. I returned it and had no problems with Amazon. They were fast and responsive to my returns.

A Priceless Tool, 2008-10-09
I've been in the renovation business for 20+ years and this is without a doubt the most valued tool in my collection. The writing is clear and concise with ample graphics to reinforce the wide range of disciplines.

Renovations 3rd ed., 2008-01-19
This is THE book that every "handyman" needs to have around the house .

I bought the original when it came out in the middle eighties and I bought this one as a gift for my son in law.

Covers a wide variety of the typical repair and renovation work that you will encounter around any house. Very well illustrated - both photos and drawings.

I am a professional handyman and this book has helped me immeasurably over the years. Can't say enough good things about it. This edition is better than the original.

A brilliant book, 2007-12-27
I manage a green building company in Berkeley, California. We don't have money to burn, so before I buy a book for our library, I scope out the competition. Mike Litchfield's RENOVATION: 3rd Edition is by far the best in the category. It's extremely detailed, yet easy to read. Its coverage is broad and deep, it's well illustrated, its photos are clear and helpful and--perhaps most important--it rings true. It's field-tested, full of tips from hundreds of veteran builders. Our guys love it. So much so that I have to replace RENOVATION 3 every three or four months, when it goes missing from the library. By any measure, it's a brilliant book. It was one of the first mainstream building books to champion energy conservation, and Litchfield helped launch Fine Homebuilding magazine. If you buy only one book on home renovation, this is the one to buy.

Only buy this book as an overview of what you are going to have to do. If you need specifics you'll need more books.
