1 out of 5 starsPlus size? Are you kidding me?, 2008-10-16
It's a good thing I looked at this in the local library before I ordered it. I spend a lot of money on books every year, but this one I would have sent back (and that's a rarity for me).

This book claims to be for plus sizes, but the largest sizes in it state a FINISHED size of 46". It says that is to fit a 40 to 42 inch bust. (I wrote it down.) Hmmm, maybe if I am ever dying of some wasting disease I'd knit one of these. Wait! I wouldn't need it afterward, so I guess not.

And other reviewers have already mentioned the lack of shaping on these sweaters. I don't find that a problem, since a 40" bust doesn't need as much shaping anyway. So the baggy straight lines make me no difference. Of course, if it were to truly fit a plus size bosom, some dart shaping and a bit of a waistline would improve these patterns tremendously.

In defense of one aspect of the book, I must say I totally understand the "we're promoting our yarns" mentality. Yarn companies do that. Nothing wrong with it; if you are a fan of their yarns and like the designs, you'll love the book. Usually works. And one can always substitute.

It's just too bad that true PLUS SIZE knitters who might be fans of their yarns, and were finally hoping for some recognition were insulted in such a blatant way (and not just ignored as usual). If they would simply republish the book without the "plus sizes" subtitle, they could find their target market more easily.

And not many who fit these are gonna take a look at the book. If vanity sizing won't let a woman buy the right size jeans without retailers "fudging" the numbers, then do they honestly think a "regular" size woman would be caught dead knitting from a "plus" size book? Get real. And when I think about it, the "real women" title is insulting anyway, as all women are real women, not just those of a certain size, age or style.

Sadly, the clear message sent to me by publishing this insult is that anyone with a normal size bust is a "plus size" to them. And who knows what name they're using to refer to us more generously endowed females?

It makes me not want to purchase anything in future from the yarn company or the designers who contributed to this book.

Classic Knits for Real Women: Versatile Knitwear Designs For Plus Sizes I was very disappointed with this book. In the title it says that the patterns therein are for Plus Sizes. I do not consider a size 46 adequate for most Plus Sized Women.

If you want flattering styles in large sizes, don't waste your money buying this book.
The sizes are not generous, and if I'm going to have to resize a pattern, I'll start with something that actually suits my shape, thank you.
Bobbles on bulges? Get real!
I passed my copy along to the library where some frumpy size 14 may get some use out of it.

5 out of 5 starsClassic looks for the mature set, 2008-04-02
I really love this book. I am 50+ and a size 14. These designs are flattering, classic, and elegant. I don't like anything too trendy, but the basic jackets are dressed up with trim and/or beads. These touches add style and offer a chance to add contrasting colors and textures to take the designs beyond the ordinary. There are several of the styles in this book that I plant to make.

Great designs, good yarns and sized realistically for today's knitters. Will probably make at least 5 projects out of this book and suggest its purchase to my students.
