4 out of 5 starsIndiana Jones, 2008-06-17
Indiana Jones is back! It's been a while and I had almost lost hope that there would be another Indiana Jones adventure. But Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be out in theaters in just a few short weeks.

Indiana Jones- Off the Beaten Path is the Indiana Jones fan's Bible. It's got summaries and background information on the characters for each of the movies. It even provides some hints about what could be happening in Indy's latest adventure.

There is also an interesting section that looks at the facts and myths behind the movies. A variety of different questions are answered. There are also resources illustrating the life of an archaeologist and outlines of some of the ancient cultures touched upon in the movies.

5 out of 5 starsThe perfect gift for any fanatic for the series, 2008-06-07
With the upcoming release of the newest movie, Indiana Jones has found himself back in the mainstream once more. "Indiana Jones Off the Beaten Path: An Unofficial Expedition" is a completely unauthorized handbook taking a complete look at the series and the phenomena behind it, with a focus on the reality that inspired the series of movies, visiting the real locations depicted in the movie. Enhanced with black and white photos, illustrations, and more. "Indiana Jones Off the Beaten Path: An Unofficial Expedition" is the perfect gift for any fanatic for the series, and a nice addition to community library collections dedicated to cinema.

2 out of 5 starsOk Read, 2008-05-05
This is written for kids 9-12 in my opinion. The wording is for someone who's reading capabilities are not as advanced or likes a more simplified terminology.

For one thing they keep referring to the Last Crusade as the Lost Crusade which is a little irritating if is his wife is the #1 IJ fan. A Lot of the information was good but a lot of it was also written as his opinion. Some of things that he talked about as being Myth such as the Ark of the Covenant or Noah's Ark are simply his opinion.

2 out of 5 starsMixed feelings!, 2008-04-21
The author mentions that the book shouldn't be described as "for fans 9 to 12"; however it's definitely written for the new Indiana Jones fan who is looking for basic information.

There's little here for IJ fans who are already very familiar with the characters, the stories, the available products, etc. If you are already interested enough in Indiana Jones to frequent one or more of the many IJ resource sites online (e.g., [...], etc.), then you're probably going to find this book to be "below speed".

For instance, nowhere is this more evident than in the author's recommendation that anyone wanting to purchase a fedora should "buy an officially licensed fedora that looks exactly like the movie version". His recommendation? A "wool felt fedora...on sale for [$...]".

While the neophyte might find such a recommendation completely reasonable, it's actually a good example of why this book was disappointing. The idea that anyone can buy a good-quality fedora for [$...] is laughable....as is the idea that Indiana Jones wore a "wool felt fedora". If you want to buy the EXACT quality of hat -- fur felt, not wool -- that Indiana Jones wore in the films, it will cost several hundred dollars and is not available anywhere for [$...]. (The hats in 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' were made by Steve Delk and Marc Kitter of Adventurebilt.com and start at [$...]. It's a high-quality hat that will last for years.)

While that example might seem irrelevant to some, it's an example of the kind of information that made me shake my head as I read it.

This book also seems to rely heavily on the "theme park" aspect of Indiana Jones licensing. A great many of the photos in the book are snapshots taken at Disneyland or Disneyworld. Anyone who's been to one of these attractions will recognize many of the photos as things you saw while standing in line for an hour...or while watching actors pretending to be Indiana Jones. While there's nothing "wrong" with this...I felt like I was looking at someone's vacation photos.

(It should be noted that this book IS clearly labeled as "unofficial"; however I've seen a great many "unofficial" books that manage to use real-life photos of the subject being written about. Even something as simple as some basic press shots of the principal filmmakers would have given this book a higher impression of legitimacy.)

On the positive side, I DO think this is going to be a great resource for children of the present generation who didn't grow up with Indiana Jones at the big screen. It will likely be a great resource for them to read while they go back and discover the films, stories and characters that the serious fans already know about.

But, if you're a long-time fan of Indiana Jones....this book will likely not tell you much that you didn't already know.
