3 out of 5 starsGood Feet?, 2008-05-31
I bought this book because I have heel pain. It contains a lot of good information, some of which conflicts with that of my podiatrist. The author advocates being barefoot for healthy feet. Maybe being barefoot caused my problems? For now it is three months of "inserts." Then I will happily try barefoot again.

4 out of 5 starsNot much about hips and spine, but still a good read, 2005-10-07
While you shouldn't look here for much insight into the relationship between your feet and your hips and spine, it is still a worthy read to understand and address problems with foot function. He discusses the muscles and bones of the feet, shoes that harm, how to choose good shoes, the benefits and evils of foot support, and treatment alternatives. This is not a how-to exercise book, although he does include an exercise or two for stretching.

A key suggestion: Go barefoot. Maffetone says, "The fact is, being barefoot can help restore normal muscle function in the feet better than any other therapy." I had read something similar recently, about our American shoes being so supportive and stiff that they prevent normal foot function.

And one weakness: I was hoping the book would discuss leg length differences, a fairly common problem that often causes hip pain in the longer leg (which takes the weight) and ankle and knee pain in the shorter leg (because that foot is kind of used to push off).

With that said, the book still provides plenty of valuable information that is worth the money.
