Editorial Reviews
Product Description
This book of essays, poems, and interviews by Islamic and Sufi poets, scholars, and storytellers is a much-needed compendium of works from a complex tradition that holds timeless messages for contemporary readers. Contributors range from Rumi to Seyyed Hossei Nasr to Emma Clark — together they create a mosaic of the Muslim view of the world and the cosmos, as well as of Sufi rhythms and rituals. Contributions like “Out of the Hidden Root” and “Slumber Seizes Him Not” promote a deeper understanding of one of the world’s great, and most misunderstood, spiritual traditions.

5 out of 5 starsA Pleasure to Read, 2008-09-12
When I first clicked on the preview button and noticed from the contents page that this book included works by Henry Corbin, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, and Gai Eaton I knew I had to purchase it immediately. Three of my favorite people all in one book what more could I ask for ? I wasn't disappointed when it arrived either. This book is a real gem. It contains a collection of past articles from PARABOLA along with selections of good Sufi poetry added for your reading pleasure.

S.H. Nasr's chapter on the meaning of Prophecy is top notch and the chapter on the the Hajj pilgrimage by Gai Eaton opened my eyes to certain symbolic realities of the rituals and places involved. This book would provide a great introduction to Islam for someone new to the subject**. Some of the chapter titles sound a little "esoteric" but the authors do a fine job of explaining things in layman's terms.

** Don't get me wrong though.. even a person who has read a whole library worth of books on Islam can still find wisdom and reading enjoyment from this book as well!
