Useless Reguritation, 2008-06-01 If you've read the articles and/or on line interviews or clicked around on youtube, there is nothing new here whatsoever. It is a reprint basically of everything already in print. Some sections, if the quotes were similar in two different interviews, the author repeats the same story and redunant quotes, as if we didn't just learn this 5 seconds ago in the previous paragraph. Poor editing and thoughtless. This author did not interview anyone for this book. There are no first hand accounts of anything. Rumors printed in the press are repeated here with no basis for fact or further investigation given to them. There are no insights into who was Heath Ledger. No gained understanding of the man. Anyone with the internet could have written this book and slammed it out in a few weeks. "Mysterious death"? Gee what a compelling and misleading title. There's no mystery. The man accidentally OD'd and anyone with a TV or magazine knows this and no new information is presented here. This book is exploitive, opportunistic and pathetic.

Pretty Good, 2008-05-17 At first, when the book arrived and I read the back cover, I was afraid that it would be spun to leave us all wondering if Heath had taken his own life, but after reading it, I would have to say "bravo" to author John McShane for a job well done on this, the first of what will probably be many books and movies to come about Heath. I had always been a fan of Heath's movies, and I liked the fact that he stayed low-key and grounded. Being the same age, I always believed him to be a role model for our generation. Never being a starstruck person, I never followed his nor any other celebrity's personal life too closely, but at hearing the news of Heath's death, I was profoundly shocked and grief stricken. I've read a lot of reports and watched many of his interviews in the months since his passing, and after reading McShane's biography, I feel I've gotten a small glimpse "behind the scenes" of Heath's life. I liked the fact that a lot of the book was taken from quotes of Heath and his own personal accounts of the events of his life. He was truly driven, and knew what he wanted, and he wasn't afraid to go for it. My heart broke at certain parts of the story, particularly when Heath was quoted as saying that "He was going to be on our screens for a long time to come." And also when he revealed how much he enjoyed fatherhood and "looked forward to many more babies." And mostly his quote, "When you die, your money doesn't go with you, but your movies will live on." How erie these words resonate now. I'm saddened for the dreams he will never get to achieve, as in having more children, starring in a musical, and directing. My only problems with the book were that sometimes it dragged out too much on others in Heath's life, such as the histories of some of his girlfriends, and how some of the movies came about. These accounts could've been done in one to two paragraphs tops. Also, at the end, the account of how he was found "on the foot of the bed with pills laying about him." This is actually heresay (along with a lot of the illegal drug accounts). There are conflicting reports-most notably from Heath's father-saying he was found in bed in a normal sleeping postion and the pill bottles were on a nightstand still closed and mainly full. But overall, I give McShane a "bravo" for a quickly and well written and entertaining biography. And I hope that all future books and most likely film projects do not focus on negative heresay, but celebrate Heath Ledger as the young, driven, quirky, talented and unique individual he was.
