From the supplier: Warehouse receipts are negotiable instruments backed by the underlying commodities. They are crucial to the marketing and financial systems of many developed countries since these instruments help improve the efficiency of markets. Since they can be traded, sold, swapped, used as collateral for borrowing, or accepted for delivery against a derivative instrument, warehouse receipts are considered to be an important addition to the store of negotiable instruments in a country's financial sector. However, despite the usefulness of these receipts, their use in transition and developing economies is limited by institutional and structural shortcomings. These include the absence of an appropriate legal, regulatory and institutional environment to support a system of warehouse receipts; the lack of incentives for the development of a private storage industry; and the limited familiarity of the commercial community with these instruments.
