This IDC study presents IDC's fixed line and mobile equipment capital expenditures (capex) forecasts for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the years 2004–2009. Key features included forecasts for 11 APEJ markets, which are Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and 13 carriers, namely, BSNL, China Mobile, China Netcom, China Telecom, Chungwha, KT, PCCW, PLDT, SingTel, SKT, Telekom Malaysia, Telstra, and TRUE.
"The APEJ region is a world leader in 2G and 3G mobile services, broadband generic digital subscriber line (xDSL) access, long-haul optical transport, long distance VoIP, and limited mobility services," state Bill Rojas, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific, and Sandra Ng, vice president, Communications, Peripherals, and Verticals Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. They further comment, "Over the next five years the region will start to witness fixed mobile convergence as integrated carriers seek to capitalize on 2G/3G mobile services and xDSL access along with new disruptive technologies such as wireless broadband. India and the PRC will continue to drive the bulk of fixed-line growth in the region but fixed wireless substitution has tremendous potential in a number of markets including Indonesia, the Philippines, the PRC, and India."
