Product Description
When it reaches zero, you die.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen sets her readers’ pulses racing once again in this relentless psychological thriller of a young woman caught in a maze of secrets and stalked by a merciless killer. The countdown begins the moment you open this riveting novel that only grows more electrifying as the pages turn, more exciting as time runs out. . . .

“Don’t kill her. She’s no good to us dead.” These words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt–or the countdown to something far more sinister?

Who is after her–and what do they want so badly they’ll kill anyone in their way? That’s what Jane is determined to find out, without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD–because whoever is after her won’t hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the modern-day world.

Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has already begun, and it’s approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.

1 out of 5 starsNo need for a continuation..., 2008-11-26
This is a continuation set years after Blind Alley, but it lacks the plot and mystery of the first book. Main character Jane is a few years older now and living on her own when she is targeted again. The unfortunate decision to bring back her "love interest" from the first book was longlasting. Most of the book is spent on arguements between the two, flirting, and sex scenes. I did a lot of skimming. Worst of all was that the matchup of the two lacked any chemistry and bordered on being a disgusting age difference especially considering they had met when Jane was a minor. Stick to the first book, this adds nothing but romance under the guise of mystery.

1 out of 5 starsnot recommended, 2008-08-13
The writing is like a watered down white wine - no color and little flavor. I could not get through this book. This is the first and last iris johansen book i'll be getting. The narrator for the audio book has a grating voice and doesn't help matters.

I picked up this book because someone recommended it. Don't bother! The whole premise is that a woman in ancient Greece, who was a stage actress, hid a chest of gold that is being searched for in modern times.
Bosh! Women in ancient Greece were not permitted on stage---all roles were acted by men in women's dress. Do your research more carefully Ms. Johansen.

3 out of 5 starsCountdown: A "Normal" mystery thriller, 2007-10-04
General Outline:
Jane is trying to be a normal university student when she gets dragged into a life she thought she left behind. When her childhood friend is killed instead of her in a kidnapping attempts she must once again deal with her mysterious/dangerous protector named Trevor. She and Trevor have had several run ins over the years dealing with the lost gold of Cira, a famous actress in pompeii before its destruction. Jane looks like "Cira" so she tends to attract people who think she has a mystic connection to her. Once Jane recovers from the shock of having her friend killed in front of her she is on the case and what was a simple case of revenge turns into a race to stop a master brain washer from unleashing his unquestioning servants against the U.S.A.

This wasnt a bad book, as the review title states it was a normal mystery thriller. The main character in this book is apparently a secondary character from a couple of pevious books. With this story all the main characters are brought in early and the first half of the book (more or less) details their emotions and various catching up scenes and why-I-like/don't like you moments. By the time Jane leaves the U.S.A and ends up in Scotland where a few more characters are introduced and after a few more emotion scenes we get to the actual story and it turns into the normal terroists are going to blow somthing up and the heros must rush around and put themselves in mortal danger to stop them story. Suffice to say all the bad guys end up having a really bad day when they finally meet the heros. The story is a fast read and it does keep you turning the pages to find out how exaclty everything wraps up and yes it does leave room for *yet* another sequel. All in all fans of this author and light mystery romance fans will proably enjoy this book.

1 out of 5 starsMy first, and last Johansen book, 2007-03-09
I've looked at IJ books on the shelves for years, but never read any of her work. This was my first IJ book and sadly I would not recommend it. Countdown is very clearly a part 2 or part 3 of something she wrote previously.

The first part of the book is full of people showing up with no character development at all. At first I thought it was just really poor writing, but then it dawned on me, this is a part 2 of some story started previously. As I continued reading, the vast majority of the story flashes back to previous events, characters, conflicts and plots from part 1, whatever that was.

I think IJ owed it to her readers to mention this as a continuation. It would be a huge help for new IJ readers (like me) so we could read part 1 first.

Then again, maybe the lack of character and plot development is typical for IJ. Countdown was supposed to be about a bomb plot, yet 2/3's of the way through the book the bomb has received only a sentence or two of coverage and across the entire 500+ pages, it warrants less than a full page or two of mention.

Countdown is more of a romance/love story than the thriller it is marketed as. If you go into it expecting a romance, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for a thriller, look elsewhere. If you're looking for an ending, look elsewhere.
