Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Jean Chatzky has been working with viewers of NBC’s Today show for a yearlong series on how to get out of debt once and for all. Her method, both on TV and in this book, is simple yet powerful: the key is saving just $10 a day that you currently waste. It doesn’t sound like much—a movie ticket or lunch for two at McDonald’s— but $10 really can take you from debt to wealth in just a few years. And because it doesn’t feel like an impossible goal, people are more likely to stick with Chatzky’s plan than an extreme regimen of spending cutbacks.

Chatzky is focusing on debt because it’s the single biggest threat to our financial health. The average American family has sixteen credit cards and high-rate debt of more than $8000, not even counting car loans and mortgages. They pay more than $1000 a year in interest alone. Debt makes people feel depressed and overwhelmed, leaving them without enough money for the truly important things in life—education, retirement, owning a home, feeling secure.

Chatzky, one of America’s most popular personal finance experts, writes in down- to- earth, woman-next-door language about how to get started right away, without giving up the things that truly give you pleasure. She offers practical, accessible strategies to help readers find the money to pay off their bills, lower their interest rates, and improve their credit scores. Featuring real-life examples of people featured on her Today show series, Pay It Down can transform debtors into future millionaires.

This has been one of the most valuable books I have ever read! I have re-read it several times already. I am putting the author's ideas into practice and let me tell you: THEY WORK! It is simple (but not necessarily easy) and definitely working in my life. I have shared some of the principles with my adult daughter, just to get her thinking along these lines. I am tempted to purchase 20 copies and include them with Christmas gifts....it is really THAT important. Highly recommended, very easy to read. Worth its weight in GOLD.

I enjoyed this book's simple, no nonsense approach to getting a handle on debt. It was very "readable." I especially enjoyed the actual manuscripts of what to say to credit card companies, and sample letters to write to dispute things. Very helpful book.

1 out of 5 starsWhat income bracket is she in?, 2008-04-14
$10 a Day! What Income Bracket does this woman live in? That is around $300 a month, and a lot of the people that I know that need help work very hard to take that much home a week. Perhaps she should spend some time learning how the other half lives. I know people who went into debt so their kids could see a doctor, and have to decide between medicine and food every day.
I guess they should categorize these books acording to income bracket.

2 out of 5 starsNo new information, 2008-04-12
I did not find this book particularly helpful or useful. The concept is that you cut back your spending by $10.00 a day, and then take this money and apply it toward your debt. That is basically it. I think that this concept would have been better suited to a financial advice column, not repeated over and over in book form.

Purchasing this book is not money well spent. I find Mary Hunt's financial books to be much more informative, focused, and helpful.

Excellent gift form teen-agers and young adults to help them understand where credit card debt can lead them.
