Product Description
As the daughter of one of the founders of H&R Block, Barbara Stanny grew up depending on her father, and later her husband, to manage her money--until a devastating financial crisis became a dramatic wake-up call. She knew she had to take control. But how? Stanny began her inspirational journey to financial enlightenment by interviewing successful women from diverse backgrounds. As a result of her research, she discovered a surprising series of common-sense ideas that smart women shared. In this informative financial guidebook, Stanny uses these insights to show women how to go from feeling helpless to being knowledgeable and confident about money. Prince Charming Isn't Coming weaves together sensible advice, refreshing anecdotes, and the author's own poignant experiences. It addresses the psychological stumbling blocks that prevent many women from managing their own money and offers savvy, practical checklists to guide them toward financial stability. This is the book that can take any woman from an unsure future to a secure one--before a crisis strikes.

5 out of 5 starsA little financial cheerleading never hurt!, 2008-06-02
The Seattle Times reviewed Barbara Stanny's book Prince Charming Isn't Coming and said, "A heart-to-heart talk about the psychological and financial tools women need to take control of their economic destiny." I agree!

Barbara Stanny writes Prince Charming Isn't Coming from her personal been there, done that, learned a lot and never want to do that again point of view. The subtitle, How Women Get Smart About Money is truly the essence of this book.

Let me ask you four questions:
Not sure of your checkbook balance?
Not sure if or where you have a retirement account?
Don't have the time or money to save?
Believe someone will "rescue you" if you need financial help?

If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, Prince Charming Isn't Coming by Barbara Stanny is a must read for you. This isn't strictly a financial "how-to" book because the author is convinced that wealth building begins on the inside. We all, not just women, need to understand our "inner" relationship with money first, before we can develop a healthy financial future.

I acknowledge that times are changing and many women are much more financially savvy and self-confident but it never hurts to reinforce the basics. This is a good basic look at the some of the prevailing attitudes women have about money. Frankly, I've read this book a couple of times.

Barbara Stanny has divided her book into three parts:

Part One - The Problem - This is the "inner work."

Here's one chapter title, "If I'm so smart, why am I so dumb about money?" I read that and shook my head in acknowledgment; I totally understood what she meant.

I found it very helpful and interesting to read Barbara's personal story. Even though her father was one of the founders of H & R Block, she grew up in an environment in which women were dependent on men for their financial future. How many of us can relate to that? She speaks to us in clear English and from the heart. It's like having a conversation with a friend.

Part Two - The Process - This is the "aha" part.

This section could be that "aha" break-through for taking you from where you are now to where you'd like to be financially in the future.

Barbara shares six "Realizations" that could possibly change your financial life forever.

Realization #1 - No One Will Do This For Me
Realization #2 - Learning Follows A Curve
Realization #3 - All the Answers Aren't Out There
Realization #4 - There Are No Secrets
Realization #5 - Risk Is Not A Synonym for Loss
Realization # 6 - I Don't Have To Do This Alone

This section is practical, straightforward and broken down into bite-sized pieces. You'll want to read, work and digest is section carefully.

Part Three - The Power - This is the financial advice part.

Realization #7 - I Can Make A Difference

Barbara believes it is important to use your money to express your personal values and beliefs - that is the power. Firmly acting on your values and beliefs with confidence and pride makes you a very powerful woman who can and will make a difference.

Each chapter of Prince Charming Isn't Coming has a "Recapped" summary along with "To Do" exercises and activities. It's like a text and workbook all rolled into one.

Some people classify Prince Charming Isn't Coming as cheerleading or a pep talk - I say, what's wrong with that? If you're looking for hard-core financial advice on bonds, mutual funds and the stock market then this book isn't for you.

Barbara Stanny has developed quite a reputation for championing women toward achieving financial freedom and independence. I also highly recommend her other two books, Secrets of Six Figure Women and Overcoming Underearning.

5 out of 5 starsOne of a kind. One of the best books about women and money, 2008-03-23
I absolutely love this book. I highlighted so many parts!
I work as a money coach guiding women to have a fabulous relationship with money. I find myself encountering a lot of resistance from women. Everyone says:-what you do is so needed-
but it seems like it does not applied to them. This book talks exactly about why the resistance is there.

Even if you think this book is not for you because you already have price charming or you believe you are an independent woman, you have to read in page 42 where Barbara writes "Please note: Mr. Right or Prince Charming need not be a man, or even a person. Our prince could be an ideal job, an insurance settlement, the lottery jackpot, or just an amorphous something -anything that we fantasize will save us financially."

This is a must read for every women. Many books do not mention the internal aspects of money, those that hide in our unconscious mind. If we don't deal with those aspects everything practical is extremely overwhelming.
I know for a fact that when people, especially a woman writes, discusses and process her money autobiography she becomes able and feels empower to sit down and do something as simple and as powerful as a budget (which includes play money so the budget does not seam like another restriction in our lives) to start taking control of her financial life.

Bravo to Barbara, I read many many books on money but her book gets to the heart of the matter.

As a facilitator of empowerment workshops for women I know that if women don't take charge of our financial lives we'll never be really empower. Money comes first, when you deal with it, it will take its proper place.

3 out of 5 starsMore of a Pep Talk than useful information, 2007-01-14
I expected this book to have more information. I expected to learn more about finances. The entire first half of the book is just a pep talk, saying that women need to learn more about money (I know I need to learn more about money; that's why I bought a book I thought would teach me something). The second half finally offers some useful advice, but still the short of it is: Do Research! (I know I should do research; that's why I'm reading books). There are a few notable pointers here and there, but you really have to dig. They are so in the middle of pep talk and testimonials about feelings that they could be easy to gloss over.

5 out of 5 starsThe Only Book I Refuse to Lend Out, 2006-04-25
I ordered this book a year ago, then took about six months to get around to reading it. Wow - just proves her point that money wasn't a subject I felt comfortable even thinking about, and now I wish I'd read it sooner. This book has absolutely changed my way of thinking and, thank heavens, my life. After two failed engagements, I found myself in a financial morass I thought I'd never escape. This book helped me feel less stupid, more empowered, and very rah-rah-get-going. It helped me understand my thinking well enough to begin to change it, and by understanding I don't mean realizing I was making mistakes, but the reasons WHY I was making them. I now recommend this book to every single woman I know (single or otherwise), refuse to lend my own copy (I re-read bits each week) and am working my way towards a balanced investment portfolio. BTW, my prince has come along and he thinks it's sexy that I am financially independent -- I wouldn't have been so attractive if I were the 'old' financial me.

3 out of 5 starsIf it's so motivational . . ., 2006-03-29
Why aren't this author's books available in an audio format? I'm too busy working my behind off to be a voracious book reader. I appreciate using my commute time (no matter the destination) to feed my brain. A big part of motivation is in the voice.
