If it's an appetite for pure hip-hop ingenuity with a side of freaky flair you've got, you can't do much better than the Wu-Tang Clan's individual players. Ghostface Killah's 2006 mini-masterpiece, Fishscale, elevated the faceless Clan man to the ranks of the world's greatest MCs by way of hot beats and his supremacy in integrating '70s soul into his sound. The Big Doe Rehab is his bid to hang on to his A-list achievement. Which it does, and handily: If lead single "We Celebrate!" seems pedestrian (Rare Earth's "I Just Want To Celebrate" can't be all that far back in the soul-keepers' vault), hang on till you get to "Walk Around," which reaches in further and pulls up a proper Little Milton track. Or forget about samples altogether and let Mr. Coles win you over by way of his proficiency with hooks ("Killa Lipstick") or skits (the name-checking "White Linen Affair"). Where one bag of tricks runs out, this disc's star and its producers--including the supremely skilled Anthony Acid, who steals the show here--pop up with something else to keep you feeling the Fishscale-caliber momentum. Ghost doesn't disappoint with this 3rd classic release in so little time. The beats and rhymes are way above par. No doo doo lyrics and music that's not the same boring junk you hear coming from those rappers made for teenie boppers. This album is certified dope.

This album is great. Ghost doesn't rap to other rappers or to other "gangstas" or for the internets or charts; he is way beyond the framework of common rap . . . this might even be better than Fishscale which was dope.

Ghostface Killah - The Big Doe Rehab (Def Jam, 2007)
Still the most consistent member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah dropped his sixth solo album (not counting More Fish) last year, The Big Doe Rehab. Anybody upset with the lack of Ghost on Wu's 8 Diagrams (also released last year around the same time) should be satisfied with Tony Starks' latest offering. Great storytelling ("Yolanda's House", "Walk Around") as well as a song for the ladies ("Killa Lipstick") should remind fans of Ghost's genius. So the good news is that Ghost provides more of the same hip-hop that he's done before.
Unfortunately, that's also the bad news. Although he never skips a beat, there is little that differentiates this album from his previous works, especially when you witness "Supa GFK". On this song, he gives a tale over an old-school song ("Superman Lover"), not over a loop, but the actual song with the original vocals intact. This effect was cool the first few times he's done it (ever since the Wu's "I Can't Go to Sleep") but by now it's tired and I wonder why it was ever considered innovative (I mean, anybody can freestyle over an old track, right?). Elsewhere, there's a redundant interlude with Ghost ranting and raving to a concert audience about the state of hip-hop today (radio hip-hop is wack, we get it already). Also, since he's a Def Jam artist, you can expect an obligatory duet with labelmate Chrisette Michele ("Slow Down").
But it's hard enough to find good hip-hop these days, especially from a major label. So, although this isn't the best Ghost has to offer, if they try to make you go to Rehab, you should go, go, go. -EJR

DON'T LET THE COVER FOOL YOU ..., 2008-07-17
My first thoughts when I saw the cover (right before it came out) was "Ah man, Ghost has sold out, and he's trying to make a club album" Fortunately I was wrong. Way wrong. If I were to compare this to any of his albums, it would be Ironman in a heart beat. From start to finish, it has a gritty, rugged, yet smooth feel. Today's MC's should take notes from Ghost on how to make a true Hip Hop album in an un-Hip-Hop day of age.
Lyrically, this is by far Ghost's most coherent work. I like his trade mark unique style, where he pours out endless imagery, to the point of you not knowing what the hell he's talking about, but I'm really digging this percise, coherent Ghostface. He took his time, and worked around with his lyrics more, and it shows. The story telling in this is insane, to say the least ... "Shakey Dog Starring Lolita (prt. 2)" "Yolanda's House" "Walk Around" "Killa Lipstick" and the ruthless "Yapp City"
The guest spots are typical for Ghostface - Wu members, and Theodore Unit, which you absolutely can't go wrong with.
The production on this is solid, and supports his lyrics wonderfully. He hired some small name producers, and they definately proved themselves.
I've been listening to this album non stop, ever since it came out (I didn't think I would) but this is really an album that'll grow more and more on you.
Unfortunately, this has been his least successful album (sale wise) and it really deserves more. Too many people are burning, downloading, or straight up sleeping on this. Big Doe is definately in his top albums (it beats the hell outta Bulletproof Wallets, The Pretty Toney Album, and More Fish.)
So if you haven't gotten this yet, do yourself a favor and give it a chance. If you're a Ghost, Wu Tang, or Hip Hop fan you'll love this ... PEACE!

Ghost Is Back... AGAIN!, 2008-07-14
Since 2004, Ghostface has released FOUR albums! One in 2004, two in 2006, and Big Doe Rehab in 2007. First off, you have to give it to Ghost for being so consistent with the music. Now to Big Doe Rehab..
Almost exactly one year after "More Fish" drops, Ghost comes back hard with "Big Doe Rehab". One simple word to explain this album is DOPE.
The production on this album is just good all the way through, and fits Ghosts flow great. You got some songs produced by LV & Sean C, Ant-Live, Anthony Acid, Scram Jones, Scyience. Sadly, there is no Wu production what so ever on this album period, which sucks but at the same time there is no weak beats in my opinion. Fans of Wu, and just good hip-hop overall will feel the beats.
Standout beats: Yolanda's House, Walk Around, Yapp City (A banger), Supa GFK, Rec-Room Therapy (Great beat), I'll Die For You, Killa Lipstick, Slow Down. So basically, a lot of these beats are hot!
The lyrics in this album, Ghost just rips it period once again, again and again. This dude just don't stop lyrically! He still gots it no doubt. I guess you could say the weaker song of the lyric side is "We Celebrate" but thats more of a club joint.
But overall, if your a Ghost fan and haven't picked up this album yet I highly advise that you do so, you won't be dissapointed!
