Product Description New York Times bestselling author Harry Turtledove has intrigued readers with such thought-provoking "what if..." scenarios as a conquered Elizabethan England in Ruled Britannia and a Japanese occupation of Hawaii in Days of Infamy and End of the Beginning. Now, in the first of a brand-new trilogy, he rewrites the history of the world with the existence of an eighth continent...
Atlantis lies between Europe and the East Coast of Terranova. For many years, this land of opportunity lured dreamers from around the globe with its natural resources, offering a new beginning for those willing to brave the wonders of the unexplored land.

Good but not Great, 2008-08-15 Opening Atlantis, though not of the same caliber as the American Empire series or the Great War series is a good read. It postulates the existence of a land mass between Europe and the Americas -- initially discovered by fisherman from the continent -- and follows is settlement through the next three hundred years. It ends in what appears to be around 1800 so he has left it open to a sequel.
I enjoyed reading it and will certainly purchase the sequel when/if it is released, but was a little disappointed in the book. It did not seem to have the same level of plot and character development that his previous "alternate history" books have had.

I love alternate history, 2008-05-30 I've read almost every alternate history novel Harry Turtledove has written. As a history buff I love these stories, and since I'm trying to write alternate history myself, I think Turtledove is one of the best. Opening Atlantis was an interesting take on what-if the Eastern US was an island and the English/French fishermen found it at least 100 years before Columbus sailed. He describes weird looking animals, are honkers really flamingos or are they something entirely different? What kind of "eagle" would be that big? The novel takes us through the English Civil War to the Pirates of the Caribbean(or of the Hesperian Gulf in this case) to the 7 Years War between the French and English. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Are you Kidding?, 2008-05-15 It ended a little weak but over all this was a good read and I enjoyed the history much more than some of the more recent books in ongoing (dragged out)series.

Turtledove is Slipping, 2008-04-16 i think I have read almost all Harry's books, particularly his various serials. This one is at the lower end of the scale. It is hackneyed, filled with known extrapolations of our own history (substitute the Bretons for the earlier Irish), and a convienietly ignored Terranova, except with minimum coverage. Let's see, the forthcoming "United States," will show the colonies and their revolt from the UK and who knows whatever other stuff he might put in. Perhaps build Trerranova up some more. its too large to be ignored completely, even if "Atlantis" is in the way.
If you like a true bow (in retrospect) to Kenneth Roberts' classic settlers novel, then go for this one. otherwise, eh.

Atlantis revisited, 2008-04-05 This is an alternative history of the propagation of English, French and Spanish peoples into the New World, a different New World than our own. His presentation of the process of change over the first several hundred years is interesting, seen through the eyes of those who lived through them. Quite good.
