Loss Given Default Definition

Loss Given Default – LGD is the amount that is lost by a financial institution when a borrower defaults on a loan. The loss given default is not necessarily equals the total amount of the loan. E.g.  if the debtor pledged collateral against the loan, the bank receives these assets, and their countervalue will be deducted from the amount of the loan.
