Margin requirement Definition

The amount of cash or equity that must be on deposit with a brokerage firm or bank before an investor can begin buying or selling short on margin. The Federal Reserve Board determines the margin requirement. Brokerage firms may decide to maintain margin requirements that are stricter than those stated in the Federal Reserve Board’s Regulation T. The margin requirement for stocks is currently 50%.
