Headline Inflation Definition

A measure of the total inflation within an economy. It is calculated on the basis of the cost to purchase a fixed basket of goods. The calculation uses a base year and indexes current year prices based on the base year's values. This number is highly influenced by prices of goods that may experience sudden increases such as food or energy.
