Leading Indicator

Leading Indicator Definition

Leading Indicator refers to a measurable economic factor that changes before the economy has changed. Examples of leading indicators include building permits, unemployment insurance claims, inventory changes and stock prices. These indicators are used to predict changes in the economy, but are not always accurate. The Fed examines many of the leading indicators as it decides what to do about interest rates.
