Shareholder Loan Definition

A debt-like form of financing of a company from an individual shareholder.  It can be secured by the shares or through a debenture. Usually, it is the most junior debt in the firm's debt portfolio. This type of loan ranks below commercial loans. As it belongs to shareholders it needs to be treated as equity.
