Shareholder Loan

Shareholder Loan Definition

A debt-like form of financing of a company from an individual shareholder.  It can be secured by the shares or through a debenture. Usually, it is the most junior debt in the firm's debt portfolio. This type of loan ranks below commercial loans. As it belongs to shareholders it needs to be treated as equity. Maturity of shareholder loans is usually long with low or deferred interest payments.
